THROWBACK: THE TOP 30 GREATEST HIP-HOP MCs, FLASH FM, 2002

In 2002, Kid Fury and myself put together a Top 30 Greatest Hip-Hop MCs show for the internet station Flash FM which I was on at the time. Makes for interesting listening as to who the hottest spitters in the game were up to that point, (at least according to this list, compiled with listener input!) Many will doubtless disagree with many of the results, but here it is either way!

MD GUESTS WITH IVAN FROM PHOENIX ON THE GUY NEXT DOOR PODCAST

I had a great conversation with the dude Ivan Oyola Jr. for his Guy Next Door Speaks podcast yesterday, getting into everything from the systematic degeneration and debasement of hip-hop, to Predictive Programming and the hijacking of human free will, and the consequentialism brought about by the choices we make under Natural Law. Here it is.

MD'S 1990 HYBRID MIX

On the grounds that a good DJ appreciates the opportunity to occasionally play styles outside of their regular comfort zone ... here's a revival mix that's a bit different to the norm.

This one marks the 25th anniversary of 1990, in my view, one of the most fascinating years for music. This was the point at which acid house and rave culture had caught on in the UK, but hadn't quite developed into the house/ dance scene that characterised the rest of the 90s. At the same time, there were still a lot of soul, funk and reggae sounds around - particularly that Soul II Soul-style rhythm. The result was a hybrid sound fusing all these elements that was very distinctive to 1990, and marked a turning point from one decade into another.

Pretty much all these joints are British in origin. They all sound well-dated now, of course - but that's part of the appeal. Many of them also provided a harsh reminder of just how bloody difficult it was to mix off 7" vinyl!

If you're looking for an 'urban' or hip hop fix, this won't be for you. But if you're open-minded enough to appreciate different styles and a little piece of music history - and particularly if you were around in 1990 raving to or playing all this good stuff - download, listen, and float off into a zone.

MD'S 1990 HYBRID MIX

KICKING BACK Featuring TAXMAN: DEVOTION
VOICES OF AFRICA: HOOMBA HOOMBA
KICKING BACK Featuring TAXMAN: EVERYTHING

Before Good Vibrations takes an enforced hiatus of a few months, Volume 70 is all about the upcoming Truth & Freedom Alldayer event, happening on Saturday 24th October 2015 at Bingham Hall in Cirencester.

Mark Devlin chats to the event's main organiser, Dani Rastelli, about the ethos behind this unique gathering. He then chats to two of the main speakers - health & nutrition researcher Clive de Carle about natural and holistic health issues, and researcher and activist Tony Sayers about the tenets of Natural Law. We finish by linking with conscious rapper MC Swayze, one of the music acts at Truth & Freedom.

There's further information about it all at www.truthandfreedom.co.uk. For tickets please e-mail Dani at truthfreedomcollective@gmail.com with TICKETS in the subject title. Say how many you want, and we'll get back to you with the Paypal account details.
