OXFORDSHIRE GUARDIAN MUSIC COLUMN, 1/4/13

Yo Yo Honey is an act that could seemingly offer a good insight into the mythical artistic 'hiatus'. I remember them from the very early 90s when they dropped tracks like 'Let's Get It On'. After presumably bubbling away in the background for a while, they've cropped back up with a new EP headed by the track 'Yo Yo'. It's reassuringly soul-drenched in all its versions, but Mani's Soulsonic Remix is the one I'm slamming. His treatment on the cut 'Groove On', meanwhile, takes things nicely into soulful house territory.

The new offering from the puzzlingly-named vocalist KCAT will sound instantly familiar to music heads who were clubbing or listening to the radio in the mid-90s. 'Greater Love' is a reworking of the timeless classic from Don Lloydie and Soundman featuring Elizabeth Troy, from the days when drum 'n' bass was still officially referred to as Jungle. I wasn't sure about this new version at first, as I've always held the original in such high regard, but after a few listens I've concluded that it's a very worthy update that will introduce a killer song to a whole new generation of listeners, which can never be a bad thing!

If soulful, funky business is how you like things, you could do a lot worse than to lock on to OX105FM for a four-hour sweep every Sunday. First off, my old mate Robin Holland is now presenting a wicked throwback show called The Classic Jam from 4 to 6pm, showcasing 80s soulful grooves, along with a few more contemporary moments. Robin's a veteran in the radio game, and for almost 20 years was resident DJ at the legendary soul nights at The Belfry near Birmingham, which I was privileged to guest at many times. You then get Dan Gill from 6 to 8pm offering more of the same, in his own words, 'all things funky'. The station broadcasts on 105.1FM around Oxford, plus streams live on-line at www.ox105.net. My own show, The Sound Of Now, runs every Saturday from 6 to 8pm, playing, basically, the sort of stuff you read about right here.

GOOD VIBRATIONS PODCAST VOL. 10: LENON HONOR

Good Vibrations takes it back to the music, as Mark Devlin talks to American researcher/ author/ musician Lenon Honor, who analyses the symbolism, imagery and lyrical content in music videos and Hollywood films. Here, he provides some fascinating insight into the continued proliferation of Autotune, the transhumanism agenda glamorised by Beyonce's 'Single Ladies' video, the demonic entity 'Rain Man', as it appears in Rihanna's 'Umbrella' and many others, the lyrical degeneration of hip-hop, and much more. MD ILLUMINATI MUSIC INDUSTRY PRESENTATION, THIS THURSDAY

I'm taking a new presentation on the road this Thursday at the following event - a much-expanded expose of the various mind control manipulations of the mainstream music industry, and the REAL reason music, (and particularly that which masquerades as "hip hop" and "R&B") is now so bad ... and it ain't anything to do with some natural cycle, or corporations simply wanting to make easy money!

I hope to have video footage to post shortly afterwards. In the meantime, if anyone can make it to West Sussex on Thursday 21st from 8pm ... feel free to come along! Real talk all the way.

OXFORDSHIRE GUARDIAN MUSIC COLUMN, 18/3/13

An old Spitting Image joke from back in the day involved a reporter asking the Madonna effigy what her new tune is like. 'The old one', she replies. It's a line that could be applied to the new Rudimental cut, 'Waiting All Night'. That's not to diss it, though. The group have settled on a very distinctive blend of mainstream-friendly D&B with catchy hooks and rousing basslines, and the result stands out nicely from the glut of soundalike tunes that otherwise dominate 'urban' playlists everywhere. This is a real dancefloor rouser.

One of the most eagerly anticipated LP releases of recent months has been Justin Timberlake's 'The 20/20 Experience', which has just dropped. Clearly it comes with a huge dose of hype, not least because JT has been recruited as the newest associate of Jay-Z. Making allowances for its deliberate A-list appeal, however, it does contain a fair few highlights for those who like their music tinged with a bit of soul and funk, 'Tunnel Vision', 'Pusher Love Girl' and the title track are among the highlights.

Other tracks I've been digging on my The Sound Of Now show include the gospel-tinged soulful house excursion 'Spirit Of The Dance' by Lorenzo Tyler, Mike Delinquent Project's contemporary UKG slammer 'Mama Said', remixed by the genius that is Zed Bias, RaVaughan's cool and soulful 'Better Be Good' featuring Wale, and Georgia Ann Muldrow's retro-style organic soul outing on 'Akosua'.

Incidentally, be sure to catch OX105FM broadcasting live from Oxford Ice Rink on Easter Saturday, 30th March. I'll be doing my show from 6 to 8pm, before Spex and the 2Xclusive collective step up to keep the vibes going from 8 to 10.30pm. If you can make it to the venue, come and witness the action live. Otherwise, you can catch it on your radio at 105.1FM, or via the on-line player at http://www.ox105fm.com

OXFORDSHIRE GUARDIAN MUSIC COLUMN, 4/3/13

One of the most far-out, metaphysical rap tracks of the 90s was Killah Priest's 'One Step' from 1998, and I'd forgotten all about it until his new offering landed in my inbox this week. Priest was a loose affiliate of the Wu Tang Clan, though never a fully fledged member, and his output in the intervening years has been sparse to say the least. The new 'Energy Work', featuring Wu Tang producer and founder RZA, offers more of the next-level esoteric lyricism over a captivating beat, and makes for another mindblowing listen.

A further pair of names familiar in the 90s are continuing to collaborate, meanwhile. Redman and Method Man have horsed around on many a track, and are back for more with the new and distinctly funky 'Lookin' Fly Too', also featuring the lesser-known Ready Roc.

Relationship storytelling in R&B tunes fell out of fashion a while ago. R Kelly and protegee Kelly Price always did it best. 'Special Delivery' from newcomer Bridget Kelly picks up the baton. Although it concerns the same alcohol-soaked irresponsibility endorsed by Kendrick Lamar's 'Swimming Pools', Bridget's reflective and wistful vocal performance laments the loss of her pride when she embarked on a drunken escapade, now that she's sobered up and been able to assess the consequences. Great ballad-territory stuff, improved or soiled by a potty-mouthed cameo from rapper Meek Mill, depending on your viewpoint.

In garage territory, the SOS Band's soulful floor-filler 'The Finest' gets an unexpected revival from Devolution on their track 'My Friends'. The track's built around a vocal sample from the classic 80s groove, and sits firmly in contemporary dancefloor-ready style. Devolution's track 'If You Believe', from the same EP, offers more of the same.

'UK Funky' was the dominant sound of the overseas holiday hotspots like Malia and Ayia Napa in 2008, but seems to have become another short-lived trend since then. Either way, two names that broke through as a result of that scene have new sounds. Egypt, of 'In The Morning' fame, crops up as the vocalist on 'Stand Up Tall' by Footsteps, while JP Tronik, famous for the 'Jungle Skank', returns with 'Rhythmers Of The Prom'.

MD PRESENTATION ON THE ILLUMINATI MUSIC INDUSTRY, 21ST MARCH

Taking an extensive new presentation on the mind control manipulations of the A-list music industry out on the road in a couple of weeks with this event on 21st March, (well, the Spring Equinox seems as good a date as any!)

Time for the newest volume of the podcast series that showcases meaningful music for our times from artists who have something worthwhile to say, rather than just going through the motions for corporate profit.
