LISTEN TO MD AT PIENS, RIGA, LATVIA

Warning. If you like your music jiggy, poppy, all over MTV and 1Xtra, and probably produced by Will.I.Am or J.R Rotem, then please do not download this mix. You won't find what what you're looking for here.

If, on the other hand, you're musically open-minded and mature enough to appreciate a wealth of black music styles, and like hearing quality soul, funk, disco and 60s soul stompers in the mix, then you may well be feeling this. Mark Devlin throws down live in Riga for a session of quality, non-obvious revivals.

THE NOUGHTIES: IT'S A WRAP!

As you may have noticed, it's the end not just of 2009, but of the whole decade of the noughties. Look out for something really special on the radio reviewing the R&B and hip hop slammers of '00 to '09 in the mix soon. In the meantime, here's MD's written retrospectives on the main happenings in urban music over the past ten years.

This quickfire version appears this month on the Rivmixx music industry networking site (http://www.rivmixx.com.)

This more in-depth article, meanwhile, appears on Black Sheep Magazine, (http://www.blacksheepmag.com) and really breaks it down:

MD'S TOUR DIARY. LATVIA/ EGYPT. DECEMBER '09

First job of the month was the completion of 2009 Bangers - all the big tunes of the year in three quickfire mixes. This year's were harder than ever to classify, given the continuing divergence of different genres. The R&B/ Urban House and Hip Hop mixes are only loose labels for what they contain, therefore, whereas the UK Funky one does what it says on the label. This is the one I most enjoyed putting together, and is likely to be of the most interest to overseas heads keen to get a grip on the sound that ruled UK and holiday resort dancefloors this Summer. I'm giving out CD copies at my gigs, but they're otherwise available to download on the following links, (with full track listing available in the 2009 Bangers story on the main blog.)

Incidentally, my thoughts on the blurring of the boundaries between what were previously thought of as 'urban' and 'dance' music are the basis of a feature I wrote recently for the Rivmixx music industry networking site, (http://www.rivmixx.com)
There's comments in there from DJ Semtex, Maurice of Soul II Streets and Stuckee of the Play Centre music promo companies. You can read it here.

I completed a long run of artist interviews on my radio show by way a phone chat with Raekwon at the start of the month.
The Wu Tang legend was a highly courteous gent to catch to, on his way to pick up his son in New York as I kicked it to him on the cellphone. A far cry from the manic persona portrayed on track. Among other points, I asked him about the origin of the name Raekwon and his nickname of 'The Chef.' The interview's been posted on Black Sheep Magazine, which you can listen to here

On to the first weekend of the year, and this consisted of my first three Christmas sessions DJing at Trinity, a newly-opened venue in my hometown of Bicester. The spot is primarily a restaurant, tea room and bar, but also has an upstairs function room. Through December, there are several corporate and private group booking for evening meals, after which the punters are herded upstairs to dance off the calories. As a result, the crowds I was playing to clearly weren't regular clubbers, and would have been unfamiliar with anything too upfront or specialist. The solution was to dig out a whole load of Motown stompers, Atlantic soul classics, 70s disco, plenty of James Brown and Michael Jackson and a bit of Bob Marley. Everything remained loosely rooted in black music, which avoided things being too musically painful, whilst still getting punters aged 50 and above dancing.

It's always a useful experience for a DJ to step outside of their comfort zone and play styles they normally don't to crowds they wouldn't normally encounter. It keeps you sharp and is the test of a DJ's real versatlity. Kicking off a mad second weekend of December, I had one of these lined up in Riga, Latvia.

The Ryanair flight out cost less than the diesel used getting to Stansted. The downside was that it left at 6am, causing me the hardship of having to leave my warm bed and warm wife at 2.30am. Leaving behind the bombsite of a house caused by my 11-month-old daughter, I used the journey to catch up on a batch of new CD listening.

Riga was a dark and drizzly 3 degrees as I bussed it in from the airport, and I spent a good part of the day catching up on sleep, before linking in the evening with DJ Green, a hip-hop/ reggae DJ who also teaches mixing skills at Riga's Rhythm Institute. Whereas my hotel was in the distinctly Eastern Bloc-looking part of the city, we met in the charming and tourist-friendly Old Town, where a traditional Christmas market was in effect. Green mentioned his plans to relocate to London as soon as possible, and we discussed the potential difficulties of finding any DJ work there, given that the market is already saturated with young contenders. The potato pancakes and hot fruit punch set me up nicely for the gig.

The venue was Piens which, despite being an anagram of 'penis', means 'milk' in Latvian. I span alongside DJ Ai-Va, who had just that evening returned from a tour of the US, and must have been jetlagged the f*ck out! The musical guidelines for the night were that it should be a soul/ funk/ disco session, with a little indie, but definitely no cheese or pop. I took up the challenge willingly, pulling out another set that was far different from the usual fare. It was great fun. I recorded the whole session, and the download link will be available via the blog very soon.

Friday 11th was an exhausting one. After an early departure back to the airport I arrived home mid-afternoon, programming in a catch-up nap among prep for the weekend's remaining trip. In the evening, I set off for another de-bloating workout at Trinity, before managing just 90 minutes sleep at home, then another crack-of-dawn departure for the airport.

On the schedule was a very welcome return to Egypt to play at Ministry Of Sound on the Red Sea coast of Hurghada. My gig there in July was undoubtedly the best of the year, and the opportunity for 48 hours of sun in drizzly December was highly appreciated.

The only direct flights from the UK to Hurghada are with Easyjet and Thomas Cook, and neither fly on a Saturday. The only manageable-cost option was to route via Stuttgart, Germany, flying out of Heathrow with BA, then connecting with the German holiday operator Condor. I arrived into an already pitch-black Egypt at 5.45pm. and soon afterwards linked with promoter Owen for a bite and a beer at The Lodge. This is one of a handful of venues in Hurghada's Sekalla district owned by the same British/ Dutch partnership that has the franchise to trade under both the Ministry Of Sound and Hed Kandi brands in the area.

MOS at Papas Beach Club had been fully open-air in July. For the more nippy Winter nights, they'd encased the venue in a marquee-type arrangement, with added door frames. Belfast's DJ Ghost had played a couple of weeks before and and had warned me to take a jacket as the Winter nights are chilly. I found it quite reasonable in just a T-shirt.

The gig was as jumping and full-on as I knew it would be, and I had the time of my life dropping bombs between 1.30 and 4am. Gucci Mane and Usher's 'Spotlight' particularly destroyed it. I generally find myself working through a few weeks of routine, run of the mill gigs before a great one like this pops up. When it does, it makes the whole idea of doing this job entirely worthwhile.

With my flight home not until Monday, this left me with the whole of Sunday to chill in the resort. Heading for poolside cocktails at the nearby Hed Kandi beach bar, the air was being filled with calls to prayer from three different mosque minarets clashing in the atmosphere, making for a highly surreal setting. I asked what Christmas is like in Egypt. Being a muslim country, 25th December is just a regular day for the locals, although the European and American expats there tend to get together for a traditional Christmas dinner. Egypt has 7th January as a public holiday - seemingly their version of New Year's Day.

In the evening, I ate out with Cardiff-based DJ Sarah Louise, who'd been spinning at the Hed Kandi venue while I was at Ministry. We talked about DJing chores back home, where she revealed that she routinely works six nights a week, and through December, is doing crushing 3pm-3am shifts. Even half of that is too much for me. We flew back with Easyjet to Gatwick on Monday 14th after rinsing the Duty Free shop for cheap vodka (for me,) perfume (for Wifey) and fags (for the mother-in-law.)

Full track listings are below, and there are two versions of each mix - 128kbps if you're after a quick download, or the full 320kbps experience.

In the meantime, hold tight for some big news about a massive retrospective on the entire decade of the 00s, hitting the radio at the end of the year!

FILM REVIEW: HARRY BROWN

On the surface of it, 'Harry Brown' might make movie fans question whether it's really needed. Grizzled old guy turns vigilante to blow away menacing thugs. Charles Bronson did it in the 'Death Wish' series, and Clint Eastwood more recently in 'Gran Torino.' But 'Harry Brown' is full of surprises.

It starts out as a bleak portrayal of the loneliness of old age, as Michael Caine's eponymous character shuffles and sighs his way through life on his grim London council estate. Once his only friend is brutally murdered by the thugs and hoodies that blight the area, however, our chess-playing, ale-sipping hero decides enough is enough and, drawing on his past as a marine stationed in Northern Ireland, works his way through the protagonists.

The switch is highly implausible, as Harry goes from barely being able to make it up the stairs to kidnapping and tying up villains overnight. Of course it helps that the police, led by idealistic detective Emily Mortimer and arrogant chief Iain Glen, are portrayed as well meaning but inept, giving Harry free rein to exact his brand of street justice.

Plot anomalies aside, former commercials director Daniel Barber has delivered a dark, raw and brooding drama, tinged with shades of grey and brown to evoke the hopelessness of its setting. The violence is extreme, but the pond-life on display are so despicable, that crowds will be hollering 'go on Harry!' at every turn, and ultimately, everyone gets what they deserve. The makers have taken care to incorporate a nice little plot twist at the end, too. Michael Caine puts in a dignified and, on the whole, sympathetic performance, and Ben Drew, otherwise known as the rapper Plan B, makes a particularly loathesome hoodie.

DOWNLOAD 'HEAVY', THE MD MIX CD VOLUME 10

Another month, another vintage mix download. We're up to early 2002 with volume 10. After an assortment of hip-hop and R&B bangers that were current at the time, things move into wicked ragga/ dancehall territory with an excursion into the Rice An' Peas riddim. Then it's organic soul style with the likes of Adriana Evans, Guru and N'Dea Davenport, Bahamadia and a much-forgotten soundtrack rarity from Sunshine Anderson.

As ever, download and enjoy.

MD INTERVIEWS ON SOUTH AFRICA RADIO, SUMMER 2001

MD'S TOUR DIARY. CROATIA, NOVEMBER '09

I'm getting quite familiar with Croatia. This month saw my fourth trip inside of a year to Zagreb, spinning at the ever lively and reliable Maraschino Bar.

Zagreb doesn't feel like a European capital. There are one or two proud statues and a handful of historic municipal buildings dotted around, but on the whole it lacks much of the grandeur of other capitals, and feels more like a large random regional town. I've experienced the city in both the freezing cold (January,) and scorching heat (as early as May.) November's temperature was a moderate 54 degrees, just slightly warmer than London.

I normally hook up for a catch-up chat with the Croatian hip-hop kingpin DJ Phat Phillie, but on this occasion we never made the connection. After spending a few hours taking advantage of the wi-fi at the Laguna Hotel, I set off by foot, armed with a decent street map, to Maraschino. The square directly outside the venue was hosting a Winter wine fair. Rather than detracting from Maraschino's custom, this seemed to have the effect of pulling hordes of punters in once they'd sampled their wares.

The venue is technically a bar, but there can't have been a soul not jigging up with a drink in their hand to some degree. I certainly put the work in, DJing non-stop from 11pm to 4am, the music veering in many different directions, from house to hip-hop to disco and funk, and the session was just as lively as nights at this premium party spot always are.

I was certainly feeling the strain of the five hours by the end, and at that point came another painful departure back to the airport with no sleep. There was the opportunity for an hour, but on this occasion, it really didn't seem worth it, so I grabbed a bite of hotel breakfast as soon as it opened at six, then hit the airport bus. First flights of the day are punishing on the body, but they're often the cheapest, and have to be taken for reasons of professional economy in these challenging times. Goddamit. After routing back to Heathrow with Croatia Airlines, I was crashed out back in my own bed by lunchtime.

Description

Zagreb's liveliest party spot welcomes back the UK's Mark Devlin, dropping an exciting and varied jump-up selection.

LISTEN TO MARK DEVLIN & TEDDY TOUCH LIVE AT SOUL CITY, BERGEN, NORWAY

This is what happens when two experienced and imaginative DJs are left and trusted to do what they do - no obstruction from management, no annoying b*tches ordering Lady Gaga every five minutes. Just pure, heavy, quickfire quality tuneage.

From 90s boom-bap hip-hop, to ragga dancehall, to a burst of UK Funky and back again ... the results speak for themselves.

Enjoy!

MD'S TOUR DIARY. NORWAY, OCTOBER '09

Any gig where I can get to play tunes as diverse as Michael's Incredible Bongo Band's 'Apache' and Singing Sweet's 'When I See You Smile' - at peak time on a Friday night and with no requirement to go into familiar pop territory - is a very special thing. Sure enough, DJs from all over Norway and beyond look forward to spinning at Teddy Touch's Soul City night in Bergen. I do too, and my return visit on Friday 30th was much anticipated.

Direct flights from London to Bergen are limited, so I spent the whole day routing out first to Stavanger, then on to Bergen. Norway was chillier than the UK, but nowhere near the Arctic temperatures I'd experienced in December a few years before in Oslo, when I could actually feel my brain freezing inside my head.

Soul City's venue, Cafe Opera, is of the small intimate variety, and it's only because of this that its adventurous, but always hip hop-based music policy works. The more expansive a club dancefloor, the more calling there is for the big hits to keep larger throngs entertained. I span between sets from Teddy, kicking off with some 90s boom-bap hip hop and ragga, then, when the time felt right, unleashing some of the more bass-heavy UK Funky sounds on the Norwegian heads, which went down very well indeed.

The only sour point was the relatively early finish, with the lights coming full on at 2.45am in accordance with the city's local law. I'm used to European gigs stretching to 5am and beyond, whereas this cut-off point was far more in keeping with UK culture. The cost of living being as high as it is in Norway, many folk habitually get tanked up on supermarket booze before heading out to the clubs. This had the effect of Cafe Opera only really being busy for the last 90 minutes of the night.

I recorded both mine and Teddy's sets, and they're available to listen back to on the following links if you fancy something different to the usual club set sounds.

Mark Devlin at Soul City, Bergen, 30/10/09

Teddy Touch at Soul City, Bergen, 30/10/09

Back at my hotel, the big dilemma was whether there was any point in going to bed for the two hours until I had to board the dawn airport bus to start heading home, this time via Oslo. I gave in, getting about 90 minutes shut-eye, but feeling worse afterwards than if I'd stayed up. An occupational hazard. I'm so used to flying Ryanair that SAS offering a breakfast came as a real culture shock.

MD'S TOUR DIARY, OCTOBER '09

Some music-makers are a dream to interview. Others are damned hard work. I started the month with phone chats lined up with artist/ super-producer Ryan Leslie and J Dilla's younger brother Illa J. Not sure if I caught him on a bad day, but the Ryan Leslie phoner tested my skills to their limits, leaving me with the impression that the dude just had no interest in being interviewed. Judge for yourself with the following excerpts, which, I swear, have not been doctored in any way!

Part 1

Part 2

On Friday 3rd, I headed to Belfast for another welcome spot at Fabulouso, the weekly jam at Mono staged by husband-and-wife DJ Team Ghost and Brown Suga. On this occasion, I chose to fly from 'Bristol Airport'. This made sense as I was playing in nearby Bath the following night, which saved going home in between. I'd only flown from 'Bristol' once before, and I'd forgotten just how bloody far the airport is from the city. Calling it 'Bristol' is pushing it - it's not even in the same county, and, being approachable only by minor roads, must surely be the most inaccessible airport in the UK. Add to that some ludicrous pricing for their parking, which charges by the day of the week rather than per 24-hour period, and I can say that I won't be travelling from Bristol again.

The night at Mono was populated by an up-for-it and enthusiastic crowd, and provided a great deal of musical exorcism of some of the crap I'm forced to play at most of my English gigs. On after me was Brown Suga, who dropped a red hot dancehall selection that kept the place rocking all the way. And me.

The flight back to 'Bristol' took less than 50 minutes on Saturday afternoon. I'd barely turned my laptop on when we'd already started our descent to land. I killed the time before my Bath gig with a visit to some family friends in nearby Calne, crashing out in a spare bedroom to catch my mandatory Saturday disco nap.

The following weekend I played a session at Mirage in Aylesbury. The spot was formerly known as St. James' Club, with a sister venue in Banbury. Both are still 'gentlemens' clubs during the week, revering to mainstream club status at the weekends. I've played in a strip club and a joint with a 'live lesbian sex show' before, and wouldn't be keen to do either again. In the first, the DJs were totally surplus to crowd requirements; in the second, it was just too hard to concentrate.

I'd love to offer some wild and profound travel tales about my visit to Valencia on Saturday 17th. I learned long ago that here's plenty to say about Ryanair when things go wrong, but little to report when things run to routine. I'm not sure if I'm warming to Ryanair, or if it's just been a long time since I last had a bad experience. My last few trips have ben trouble-free and on-time. I guess I shouldn't speak too soon.

I watched the BBC's recent 'Panorama' programme on the airline with interest. Whilst I'm no big fan of Ryanair or its loathsome boss O'Leary, I felt that it presented a very biased and one-sided hatchet job, and few of its 'revelations' would be any great surprise to anyone who travels with them regularly.

I touched down in Valencia at 8.30pm ready to spin that night at Soul, a black music night run by relocated Londoner DJ Cosy O. Due to an on-line map cock-up, Cosy and myself searched for 90 minutes for my hotel in a coastal town miles away .. before realising it was back in the city at the point where we'd started after all. Although it ate into my nap time, I didn't mind as I got some great views of Valencia and its outlying districts during what was otherwise a straight-in straight-out trip. It's certainly a beautiful and impressive city with some stunning new architecture going up, and great beaches. The city is packed and sweltering in Summer. In October, temperatures hover around a very comfortable 70 degrees.

I'd forgotten just how late the Spanish party. We didn't even arrive at the club spot, Gandhara, until 2am, and it was 3.30 before I started playing. I can't remember the last time an overseas gig disappointed, and Soul was no exception. I blasted the crowd with everything from crunk to reggae to UK Funky to revivals from Prince and Chaka Khan, and it all rang off.

The European smoking ban seems to be a very grey area, (literally and metaphorically,) varying in strictness from country to country. I thought Spain had imposed the ban, but this clearly didn't extend to Gandhara as the familiar thick fog hung in the air throughout, and we emerged stinking of the cancer sticks just like in the old days. It was past 7am before I was back at my hotel, and three hours later came the painful return to the airport. Thoughts of my bed carried me through the journey from Stansted. We eventually reunited mid-afternoon.

My regular Tuesday student gig at Syndicate in Bristol got put on hold a couple of nights later to make way for a one-off Silent Disco. I had no idea what one of these was until it was explained to me. Apparently, all punters are given a set of wireless headphones with the option to tune in to one of two radio channels. Each channel is connected to a separate DJ's output from the booth, with each jock trying to outdo the other in terms of how much they can get the crowd singing along and dancing to their tunes. Must be a highly bizarre experience to walk through a club silent except for people's bad singing renditions. Are these really that common, or have I just led a sheltered existence?

The first in what's hoped to be a series of regional launch parties for Black Sheep Magazine came on Friday 23rd, as I linked up with veteran DJ/ promoter and all-round heavy guy Mr Jay. This one took place at The Emporium niterie in Fleet, Hampshire, with sounds ranging from 80s grooves through to the upfront selection. The guest on my radio show that week was Nottingham's Simone, aka C-Mone, part of the city's extended Out Of Da Ville crew. She's just put out an interesting EP project under the pseudonym Barbie Analogue, (a play on RZA's Bobby Digital alter-ego,) with self-produced beats. The tracks are very spaced-out and 80s in feel.

The early flight home ad been the only way to make it in time to host DJ Cosy O from Valencia, who was arriving in to link with me at The Bridge in Oxford that night. I'd guested at his spot a couple of weeks earlier. Once I'd picked up Cosy from the train station and deposited him at his hotel, I was finally able to reunite with my bed for a couple of blessed hours.

Things were boding well for a heavy night at The Bridge, being both Halloween and payday end of the month. It ended up being the most enjoyable night I've had there in probably five of the eight years I've been doing it. There's a lot to be said for having two DJs on a session - each brings tunes the other wouldn't have thought of, in turn inspiring each other to be ever more rocking. The crowd can only benefit from the resulting selections.

... and that was October.
